California men's basketball wraps up its final week of regular-season home action starting Thursday against Colorado in the 10th annual Pete Newell Classic. The Bears tip off against the Buffs at 6 p.m. live on Pac-12 Networks in the annual contest which honors the legacy of Cal's Hall of Fame basketball coach.
This year, Cal recognizes Shareef Abdur-Rahim with the Pete Newell Career Achievement Award, presented annually to a Cal men's basketball alumnus who has distinguished himself in his career accomplishments. Abdur-Rahim, the 1996 Pac-10 Player of the Year and current NBA G League President, will be presented with the award in a special halftime ceremony.Â
Cal will also recognize the 60th anniversary of Pete Newell's final season with the Bears, in which he helped his squad to a 28-2 record, conference championship and runner-up finish in the NCAA Tournament before guiding the United States to a gold medal in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. Coach Newell retired from coaching after the Olympics and served the next eight years as Cal's Director of Athletics.
