BERKELEY - California throttled San Diego State in its home dual-match opener on Saturday, with the 22nd-ranked Golden Bears winning 7-0 over the visiting Aztecs at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Golden Bear freshman Haley Giavara clinched the victory at court-one singles.

Cal – which started a seven-match homestand on Saturday – improved its record to 2-3. SDSU fell to 4-5.

The Bears captured the doubles point when the pair of Jasie Dunk and Julia Rosenqvist topped Julia Jordan and Tamara Arnold, 7-5, on court two, and Cal led, 1-0. Cal's Anna Bright and Alexis Nelson also beat SDSU's Nnena Nadozie and Abbie Mulbarger, 6-3, on court three.

"It was good to come out really strong in the doubles, because that's something we've really been working on, and it was great to see that come together today," Bright said. "We carried that momentum into singles."

Cal had a dominant performance in singles, with the Bears not dropping a set. Bright doubled Cal's lead to 2-0 when she bested Jordan, 6-1, 6-1, and then freshman Erin Richardson quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph to make the score 3-0. Giavara, ranked 13th in singles, beat Nadozie, 6-2, 6-3, on court one to give Cal a 4-0 lead, with the Bears adding wins in the remaining matches to complete the 7-0 result.

"We had a really good week of practice," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "Just getting out and competing on our home courts was really helpful, and getting the doubles point was very helpful. Our hard work is starting to pay off. I was really encouraged especially with how we finished some of those matches today. Hopefully that will continue to build our confidence."

Several Old Blues were at the match in the form of former Cal women's tennis coach Joan Parker and some of her former Cal players.
