No. 6 Bears Roll Past No. 17 Pacific
8-0 Run Fuels Cal Victory
STOCKTON – The No. 6 Cal women's water polo team registered eight unanswered goals and 12 different players scored goals in a 17-9 nonconference victory over No. 17 Pacific on Saturday afternoon at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
Holding on to a 5-4 lead late in the second quarter, the Bears (7-4) erupted for an 8-0 run to take a 13-4 with 3:28 remaining in the third period.
Junior
Claire Sonne had a hat trick for Cal while junior
Brigit Mulder and freshmen
Shea Salvino and
Ruby Swadling each added a pair of goals.
Freshmen
Caitlin Mary Parker Allen and
Helena Batey each scored her first career goal.
Sonne also added two assists and two steals for Cal. Mulder had a pair of assists as well.
The Bears couldn't shake the Tigers for much of the first half, but after Sonne's penalty shot gave them a 6-4 lead, Swadling made a steal and swam the length of the pool for a counterattack goal. Swadling added a backhander with five second left before the half, when Cal led 9-4.
The Bears return to action next Saturday with a matchup at No. 9 UC Davis.
