BERKELEY – Valentina Ivanov helped lead her New Zealand team to promotion in the Federation Cup on Saturday in Wellington, New Zealand, with the Cal women's tennis freshman posting a singles win in her nation's 2-1 victory over the Philippines in the final of the Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Group II round robin. With the result, New Zealand advances to Asia/Oceania Group I in the next round of Fed Cup qualifying.

Ivanov defeated the Philippines' Shaira Hope Rivera, 7-5, 6-1, to lead off the contest.

"It's a great feeling to get the win but even more special when it's for your country," Ivanov said. "Right now I'm just so happy! This is what the whole team wanted from the start of the week, and it feels amazing to achieve it. I love team environments and playing for a team because it rarely happens in tennis, and it's even better to come out victorious. Luckily I got to play singles today, on the day it mattered, so to get the win for my country on finals day is very special.

"This obviously means we are promoted up a group, and I'm very excited for next year when we will be back at it against even better teams. And also, hopefully I can take lots to positives back with me to America and get some great wins for Cal tennis this season!"

Earlier in the week in Fed Cup action in Wellington, the first-year Golden Bear beat Bolor Enkhbayar, 6-0, 6-0, in a 3-0 win over Mongolia, teamed with former Alabama player Erin Routliffe to defeat Mahin Querishi and Ushna Suhail, 6-1, 6-0, in doubles in a 3-0 triumph over Pakistan, and beat Sarah Pang, 6-1, 6-1, in another 3-0 victory, this time over Singapore.

Ivanov has also excelled in her first year of collegiate tennis with the Bears. With a 13-5 singles record, she is currently ranked 26th in the Oracle ITA poll.

The 21st-ranked Cal squad returns to the courts when it plays at fourth-ranked UCLA on Feb. 21 and then plays at No. 6 Pepperdine on Feb. 22.
