BERKELEY – California beach volleyball continued their fine form this weekend as they swept both Arizona State and University of the Pacific on Sunday at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts. The Bears completed the Bay Area Classic by going 4-0 and not losing a match. 

"From top to bottom, everyone played great this weekend; even collecting so many sweeps this weekend, you can tell based on how we are playing that it will translate when we get into the thick of the season," acting head coach Derek Olson said. "We did a lot of good things, I'm optimistic with how we can compete with top 10 teams. There are areas where we can get better, but this team always responds when we ask them."

After collecting eight ranked wins last year, the Bears secured their first ranked win of the year as they swept #19 ASU. The Bears finished the day by taking down Pacific, completing the two-day tournament with a 20-0 score and only dropping one set across the weekend. 

"This was the next step, the next challenge that was in front of us," Olson said. "We played well and now we get to focus on traveling and playing some tough Pac-12 teams, but I think this team is up for it."

The Bears will travel to Los Angeles for the Pac-12 South Tournament next weekend. 

#11 Cal (5) def. #19 Arizona State (0) 
Cal opened day two of the Bay Area Classic by taking down Pac-12 rivals Arizona State. The two teams matched up twice last year in the Pac-12 Championship, with both teams winning once. However, Cal ensured there would be no doubt in the outcome, sweeping the Sun Devils, 5-0, while only losing one set. 

Jacqueline Riberio and Chloe Luyties started the Bears off right for the third time this weekend. The duo won at the fifth spot, they trailed 13-8 in the first set, but responded after the break; winning the first set 21-18. The duo then came out strongly in the second set, winning 21-13 and putting the Bears on the board first. 

Madison Dueck and Alexia Inman started the match with a 12-5 run to force a timeout by ASU, the duo never looked back as they won the first set 21-12. They followed it up with a 21-18 victory in the second set to secure the victory on the third court. Ainsley Radell and Maddie Micheletti locked up the win for the Bears by winning on court four. They wrapped up a tight first set with a 21-17 win. Then they followed with a dominant fourth set, winning 21-14. 

At the top spot, Mima Mirkovic and Iya Lindahl jumped out to an early lead, taking a 15-6 advantage into the technical timeout. They completed the first set at 21-10. They followed that up with an 8-1 run in the second set to break open a tight matchup and cruise to a 21-12 victory. 

Jordan Polo and Caroline Schafer won the opening set 21-13, but after dropping the second set 16-21 the Bears needed to respond. They were able to do that, as Schafer and Polo started on a 7-1 run to put the set away, eventually winning 15-8.

In the final matchup of the day, Cal took down Pacific in straight sets capping a perfect weekend of play. 

Ribeiro and Luyties put the Bears on the board early, taking down Pacific on the fifth court. Cal jumped out to the lead, storming to a 21-10, 21-14 victory. Radell and Micheletti extended the lead after a dominant first set. The duo won by giving up only five points in the first set. Pacific responded by scoring the first four points of the second set, but the Bears regrouped and collected a 21-13 win in the second set to move the score to 2-0. 

The Bears clinched the match at the third spot for the fourth time this weekend as Dueck and Inman battled in a tough first set, before pulling away at the end for a 21-8 win. That momentum carried them into the second set as Cal won 21-8 and clinched the victory. 

Polo and Schafer were locked up in a dual on court two. After winning the first set 21-15, the second set hung in the balance with Pacific leading 19-18. However, the Bears collected the final three points and the win. Mirkovic and Lindahl took down the top Pacific pair by a score of 21-16, 21-11.
