Cheatham, Liu Lead the Way in Second Round of Cabo Collegiate
Every Cal Golfer Improved At Least Three Strokes On Monday As The Bears Moved Up To An 11th Place Tie
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico â The Golden Bears improved 18 strokes in the second round of the 2020 Cabo Collegiate, shooting a 279 to finish five strokes under par as a team. Cal is currently tied for 11th with one more round to play.
Â
"The team played well today, and we really needed a confidence building round," said Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf
Walter Chun. "This is one of the best tournament fields in all of college golf, and we still have our work cut out for us tomorrow to try and move up the leaderboard. But honestly, we simply have to focus on what we're doing and control what we can control. We can't worry about what other teams are doing or how they're playing."

In the Bears' second round, senior
Jamie Cheatham and junior
Kaiwen Liu each finished with 69 strokes (-2), and are sitting tied for 24th and 37th respectively. Cheatham improved 15 spots on Monday after beginning the day tied for 39th. The Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., native led the team with five birdies in the round and dropped as low as four under par with two holes remaining. However, a pair of bogeys on holes 12 and 13 solidified his two-under-par finish. Liu produced a nearly spotless second round scorecard, collecting three birdies and 14 pars compared to just one bogey.

Junior
Finigan Tilly is currently tied for 50th after shooting an even, 71 in his second set of 18 holes which is a three stroke improvement over his first round. Tilly was on pace to finish two-under-par, but was plagued with a double bogey in his second-to-last hole which brought his score back to even. Freshman
Kento Yamawaki also saw progress in his second round, besting his opening score (77, +6) by four strokes to finish with 73 (+2) on Monday. The Encinitas, Calif., native is currently tied for 65th.
