SACRAMENTO – The Cal women's golf team is in position to capture its first win since 2016 after taking the second-round lead at the Gunrock Invitational at the Del Paso Country Club.

The Bears are at +25 heading into Tuesday's final round, eight strokes ahead of second-place Sac State.

Four Golden Bears are in the top-10 individually, including co-leader Katherine Zhu. The Cal sophomore is at 3-over par for the tournament, along with Brooke Seay of Stanford.

Fellow sophomore Elena Arias is at 5-over par and tied for fifth while senior Maria Herraez Galvez and freshman Tzu-Yi Chang are part of a threesome in 10th place at +9.

Golfers battled high winds and challenging conditions throughout the first day of competition, but it was the Bears who handled the elements the best.

"I think we had a learning curve after the first 18 holes," Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. "We knew the wind wasn't going anywhere, so at some point you just have to start taking some mental notes. I'm really proud of the team for digging in and not letting the wind sweep us away. We got in some solid scores."

Cal's last team victory came in 2016 at the Bay Area Classic at Meadow Club Golf Course.

"It's a good feeling," McDaniel said. "I'm really encouraged on a 36-hole day like that to be able to turn it around like we did. But we celebrate good round and take them to bed with us, and when you wake up in the morning you have to do whatever you can do to take it shot by shot."

Zhu, who has two top-20 finishes this season, shot 74-73 to earn a share of the lead. Cal's last individual champion was Marianne Li at the 2016 NCAA Shoal Creek Regional .

"Katherine is getting to know her game better and better," McDaniel said. "She is getting more comfortable with stepping outside the box a little. You have to do that in the wind. She's really hitting her stride right now."
