Grad Transfer Ends Career Full Of Pride

When I chose to attend Cal as a grad transfer, I knew there would be ample opportunity for me to learn and grow as a student-athlete. Growing up as a kid, I always looked for ways to stretch beyond my boundaries. I loved being presented with a challenge, whether it was solving a puzzle or a riddle, or climbing and jumping off of couches. I found true joy and excitement in accomplishing a task that is deemed as difficult, or even unattainable. I have adopted this belief and have carried it with me up until this day -- determined to exceed any perceived limitations placed in front of me.

For someone like myself who is fascinated by possibility and driven by opportunity, there was no better place for me to be than at Cal.  After earning my bachelor's degree, as well as receiving all-conference honors at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, I set out to continue following my passion of playing basketball at the next level. My transition was a grinding process and there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season -- a tragedy within my family, the rigors of graduate school, shooting slumps -- but it was extremely rewarding nonetheless, and I take great pride in saying I was able to represent Cal this season. I am truly grateful for my teammates, coaching staff, administration, fans, and everyone else in between who chose to support us and make this an incredible experience. I look forward to seeing what is in store for the program -- I know Cal is in good hands.

It's an unprecedented time for all of us. I know some are still grieving and disappointed about the abrupt end to the season and not being given the chance to see it all the way through to the end.  I feel it especially for all the seniors who were affected by this decision, knowing the effort and time they have sacrificed throughout the years. I knew how ecstatic my teammates and I were about advancing in the Pac-12 Tournament and making a final run in March. I am still extremely proud of how we battled through adversity during the season, and our last game versus Stanford really cemented the progress and commitment we've made to each other and to the program. Ultimately, for a kid from Scarborough, Canada, to be given the opportunity to compete in the Pac-12 while pursuing a master's degree in public health, this has been a dream come true.

There are still a lot of emotions knowing that I put on a Cal jersey for the last time, but I know there are much bigger concerns at stake. My heart goes out to all the families and communities affected by the coronavirus.  In an attempt to find clarity through these challenging times, our current situation serves as a reminder to continue pressing forward knowing there is something greater on the other end. With a resilient approach and a belief beyond question, there will always be an opportunity for embracing adverse moments and overcoming them.
