Finding Appreciation During Challenging Times

Our team was finally building momentum as the spring season began. There were some setbacks in the fall, such as health issues and injuries, but we finally had our full lineup back in play. During the first few weeks of the semester, we won our first team title (at the Gunrock Invitational) in four years and placed fifth in our next event. Individually, I was playing some of the best golf I've played in awhile. I had just won my first individual collegiate title and placed third in the following event, and on top of that finished under par in the three tournaments we had this spring. I was excited to push myself further in the upcoming events because I still had a lot of room for improvement. The team also worked really hard to polish up in the two weeks before our next event as we all hoped to shave a few strokes off our tournament totals. Overall, things were looking good for us between our recent top finishes and the team's general positive outlook that promised many good things to come.

However, in the midst of our optimism, we found out that the remainder of the season was canceled the day after our last tournament.

Everyone was obviously upset, as we had worked so hard and things were finally falling into place. Personally, I was confused and disappointed. The work I'd put in over the past few years was finally coming to fruition.

Regardless of how badly I felt, it hit me that the seniors must have been feeling a hundred times worse than I was. They had competed in their last tournament of their collegiate career without even knowing it, and their years of representing Cal had come to an abrupt end. That really put things into perspective for me. Even though I was unable to complete this season, at least I had two more years to compete as a Golden Bear, a comfort that many other senior athletes did not share. We have just one senior, Maria, and I just hope we made her final year at Cal worthy and memorable. The team is so grateful for all she has done for our program and the memories we've created together.

A few days later, I packed up my belongings and moved back home. Despite the circumstances, this whole situation has allowed me to hold on to the silver linings of things. I appreciate that our university is well-equipped enough to continue our education online, that I'm still able to connect with my team and coaches through various platforms, and that I am fortunate enough to have some resources at home to continue to work on my game. Above all, I am also thankful for my family and my own health, and to be back home with them.

Moving forward, I know the team and coaches are working hard in their respective ways so we can come back stronger than ever next year. Overall, although the circumstances are less than ideal, I have a newfound appreciation of all my experiences thus far. As I learned from this, anything can end with a blink of the eye, so I choose to cherish the little things as they happen. Although I am heartbroken that the season is canceled, I understand that the situation going on right now is bigger than sports. I hope everyone is taking care of themselves and staying healthy, so we can get back to doing what we love soon.
