Arroyo, Windes Named To USA Water Polo Hall Of Fame
Former Cal Stars Were Each Two-Time Olympians
Two former Cal water polo standouts were part of the five-member 2020 USA Water Polo Hall of Fame class named Tuesday.
Two-time Olympians Gavin Arroyo and Elsie Windes (Wenger) were each selected to be inducted at the annual USA Water Polo Hall of Fame luncheon, which will be held at a later date.
Arroyo starred at Cal from 1990-93, helping the Bears win three consecutive NCAA Championships (1990-92), including an undefeated campaign in 1992. He was twice named an All-American at Cal in 1992 and 1993. During his time with the Bears, Arroyo established a valuable role on the U.S. National Team, paving the way to an eight-year run that included Olympic appearances in 1996 (Atlanta) and 2000 (Sydney). In 1997, Arroyo also helped lead the United States to a Gold medal at the FINA World Cup.
Â
"This is a tremendous and well-deserved honor for Gavin," said
Kirk Everist, Cal men's water polo head coach and Arroyo's teammate on the U.S. National Team. "He was an incredible player, both as a Bear and with the U.S. National Team. I know I speak for the entire Cal water polo family in saying congratulations and that we're all very proud of him."
Â
Arroyo spent time abroad during his U.S. National Team playing career, enjoying a seven-year career in Greece and Spain with Vouliagmeni, Glyfada, CN Barcelona, Olympiakos and CN Barceloneta.
Â
A native of Southern California, Arroyo currently serves as head coach of both the men's and women's programs at Long Beach State and is the acting ODP technical director, overseeing the USA Men's Development and Junior National Teams for the last five years.
Â
"Undoubtedly, a great honor," Arroyo said in a Long Beach State press release. "This program holds a special place in my heart and to be recognized by and associated with the greats of our sportis truly special. I am happy to see the tremendous growth of our sport."
Â
Windes put her stamp on women's water polo at Cal from 2004-07, where she was a three-time All-American – including becoming the program's first true freshman ever to earn the honor. She left Berkeley ranked on the program's all-time top-10 list in scoring and as a four-time All-MPSF selection.
Â
Windes made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008, helping Team USA win the silver medal at the Summer Games in Beijing. She then became an Olympic gold medalist in 2012 when the U.S. won the title in London.
"I'm honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame with so many wonderful people and amazing players," Windes said. "To be in their company is an honor. Cal was a huge part of my water polo career and I don't think I would have gotten to the places I did if I didn't go to Cal."
 Â
Windes also helped Team USA win two World Championships. She was inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
Â
"I think it's great that we are celebrating Elsie," said former Cal standout and current volunteer assistant coach
Heather Petri, Windes' Olympic teammate and a member of the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame herself. "She absolutely should be celebrated for what she brought to the national team. I really appreciated her as a teammate, and it was nice to share that Cal legacy as well. Cal pride runs pretty deep in both of us."
