BERKELEY – Brigit Mulder and Claire Sonne each scored twice but the No. 8 Cal women's water polo team fell to No. 2 UCLA 11-5 on Saturday in its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Mulder and Sonne each scored in the first quarter when the Bears and Bruins traded goals to make it 2-2 heading into the second. UCLA then scored the next three goals before freshman Cecily Turner found the cage with 19 seconds left before the half.

After the Bruins extended their advantage to 7-3 at the end of the third, Mulder scored on the first possession of the fourth period to give the Bears life. But UCLA was able to pull away once again and close out the win.

Junior goalie Cassidy Ball made seven saves for the Bears.

Cal returns to Spieker Aquatics Complex on Sunday for a nonconference game against No. 5 UC Irvine. The opening sprint is scheduled for 1 p.m.
