Steady In SoCal
Bears Up National Qualifying Score In Solid Showing At UCLA
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – California women's gymnastics capitalized on another chance to up its National Qualifying Score with a steady showing in Los Angeles. The Golden Bears posted a 196.725 to finish behind No. 3 UCLA's 197.900 in a dual meet at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.
Kyana George, who missed the last meet with an ankle injury, made her return to the all-around with a 39.350.
Maya Bordas led the Golden Bear all-arounders with a 39.400, and
Nevaeh DeSouza tallied a 39.150 while Cal claimed top 3 finishes on three events.
The Bears got off to a strong start on bars with 9.80s or better from all six gymnasts in the lineup.
Nina Schank led the lineup with a 9.925 to take second on the event, and
Maya Green anchored with a career-high 9.875. Cal combined for a 49.300 on the event, their best road score on bars since the Washington meet on Jan. 26.
George's return to the vault lineup saw her earn a team-high 9.85, which Schank matched to continue her strong start.
Maya Bordas also scored above a 9.80, earning a 9.825 to contribute to Cal's 49.0 team total.
The Bears matched their best road floor score, combining for a 49.275.
Milan Clausi rebounded from an uncharacteristic vault showing to earn a team-best 9.925 on floor, good for third on the event. George continued her triumphant return to the lineup with a 9.90, and Bordas added a 9.85 while
Grace Quinn scored a 9.825.
Bordas led the beam lineup with a 9.875 to finish as the event runner up in Cal's final rotation, while DeSouza (9.85) and Schank (9.825) also scored above 9.80s. Cal made it a 4-for-4 day in team scores, going 49.100.
The Bears return to action next weekend for a pair of meets, starting at UC Davis on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. followed by Cal's regular-season finale in Berkeley on Sunday, March 15 at 1 p.m.
