BERKELEY - Freshman Cecily Turner scored two goals but the No. 8 Cal women's water polo team fell to UC Irvine 9-7 on Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

The Bears (11-7) fell behind 7-2 midway through the third period but closed within three by the end of the quarter. The Anteaters then established a four-goal lead early in the fourth.

Cal cut the deficit to 9-6 with 5:42 left on a goal by junior Claire Sonne, but couldn't find the cage again until leading scorer Brigit Mulder scored with 42 seconds left. That made the score 9-7, but UC Irvine was able to close it out.

Junior goalie Cassidy Ball made three saves for the Bears.

Cal resumes MPSF play Saturday at No 1 USC. The opening sprint is scheduled for 12 p.m.
