Rising Sophomore Sebastian Iqbal Is Set To Join Cal Men's Golf After Spending His Freshman Season At Wisconsin

BERKELEY – California men's golf recently received a new addition to the team as Sebastian Iqbal signed with the Golden Bears after spending his freshman season at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

"We are a very fortunate program to have Sebastian coming in," said Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun. "He's an excellent student, talented golfer, and a tremendously hard worker. He is also one of the most team-oriented young men you'll meet, so he will be someone that makes an immediate and positive impact on the team."

The rising sophomore transfer will return home to don the Berkeley Blue and California Gold as Iqbal is a native of San Jose and graduated from Pioneer High School. This past season, Sebastian competed in all five fall tournaments and both of the events in the spring with the Badgers. His best finish was a tie for 29th at the Bearcat Invitational (September 30-October 1) where he set a career-low 54-hole score of 217.

At Pioneer High, Iqbal posted the lowest score in all 12 matches his senior year and won the league final by a total of seven shots. That same season, he became the 2019 CCS Regional Champion, CCS Sectional runner-up and moved on to become the first player from his high school to compete in the state championship.

A few of Sebastian's amateur career highlights include: a 2017 Future Collegians World Tour championship, two top-10 finishes (third and ninth) at the Alameda Commuter Am, and Round of 16 finishes at both the 2017 and 2018 SF City Championships.

"I am really excited to be coming back to the west coast to play at Cal," said Iqbal. "I'm looking forward to surrounding myself with great players, competing at the highest level of college golf, and working towards playing professionally."
