Staying Connected During Unusual Times
There is no doubt that this is certainly not the semester I was expecting at Cal. However, while this is a weird and confusing transition away from college life, I'm working on focusing on the things I can control in the meantime - like being great in academics, working out, and learning some new hobbies.
Since I am used to spending most of my time in the classroom, gym, or weight room, I am trying to appreciate spending more time outdoors. This means taking my dog Murphy for a walk at a beach nearby, running in the woods with my dad, and doing yoga on our back porch. I've been trying to exercise in ways that don't require a gym, so I've had to get creative. On top of getting active outdoors, our team is lucky enough to have a great strength and conditioning coach, Hank Behrens, who sends us voluntary workout videos.Â
I will say that social distancing has made this period really difficult when I'm used to spending so much time with my teammates everyday. My family and I have been very strict about staying within our little bubble and not seeing friends during this period of time. When we venture outside, we make sure to keep our distance from other people and have resorted to ordering groceries for delivery in order to reduce contact between others. However, that hasn't stopped me from keeping in touch with my friends and members of our Cal Family. I have been doing FaceTime with my teammates every couple of days to keep in contact. In addition, our coaching staff has been looking into ways to get better off the court including daily/weekly Zoom meetings on watching film and more.
If this experience has taught me anything, it has reminded me of how lucky I am to be supported by my family, teammates, coaches, and the rest of the Cal Family. As always, Go Bears!
