Four Student-Athletes Earn Postgraduate Scholarships

Yue, Wright Win Oscar Geballe Award; Ebstein, Thomas Take Pac-12 Recognition

Four former Cal student-athletes have been awarded postgraduate scholarships to help in pursuing higher degrees.

Chen Yue of women's basketball and Morgan Wright of volleyball have each won the Oscar Geballe Award, given annually to chosen Cal student-athletes for their combination of scholarship and athletic competition. The award comes with a $10,000 stipend for postgraduate studies.

Noemie Thomas of women's swimming and Sam Ebstein of men's soccer, who each graduated from Cal in 2018, have each won a Pac-12 postgraduate scholarship, created to honor outstanding scholar-athletes intending to pursue graduate studies. It includes a $9,000 stipend.

The Oscar Geballe Award was created through the generosity of Dr. Theodore Geballe to honor his father, Oscar Geballe. It recognizes Oscar Geballe's devotion to Cal and his strong belief in the value of combining scholarship and intercollegiate athletic competition. There have now been 98 Geballe Award winners since 1981.

Yue, the first Chinese-born woman to play Division I basketball, double-majored in Business Administration and Statistics and also won the Anna Espenchade Award as a graduating female student-athlete who successfully integrates academics and athletics. She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team.

Wright overcame persistent injuries and personal hardships to excel at Cal, where she became a member of the 2019 Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll. Wright will begin her postgraduate work in the fall at Newcastle University in England, where she will study International Business Management and also play for the volleyball team.

Ebstein graduated from Cal in 2018 and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection. He came to Cal as a walk-on after missing most of his high school career with compartment syndrome in his legs but still excelled enough to become a two-time All-Pac-12 selection. Ebstein is currently working on his Master's in Computer Science at the University of Chicago.

Thomas had a decorated career at Cal and also competed in the 100 butterfly for her native Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Thomas was also a four-time CSCAA Scholar All-American. Later this year, Thomas will begin the MBA program at the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business.
