Bears Collect Indoor All-America Honors

McKay Johnson, Joshua Johnson Earn Indoor Track & Field Recognition.

NEW ORLEANS – California men's shot put standouts McKay Johnson and Joshua Johnson were recognized as 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field All-Americans on Tuesday as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Mckay Johnson earns Indoor All-America status for the third consecutive year in the shot put, while Joshua Johnson grabs his first All-America honor.

McKay Johnson was set to enter the NCAA Indoor Championships with the third-best mark in the country at 20.63 meters (67-8.25), breaking his own indoor school record he set a year ago by winning the New Mexico Team Open on Feb. 1 in Albuquerque.

He won both shot put competitions he entered this season after taking the MPSF title with a heave of 20.44 meters (67-00.75) on Feb. 29 in Seattle. This is the third straight year Johnson earns Indoor All-America honors after taking eighth-place at both the 2019 and 2018 events with marks of 19.67 meters and 19.64 meters, respectively, collecting First Team All-America honors each year.

Joshua Johnson had a strong season of his own, and was set to enter the NCAA Championships with the second-best mark in school history under his belt. Johnson posted a top throw of 19.60 meters (64-03.75) to take second place at the MPSF Championships, improving his mark in the Cal all-time indoor record book.

Also grabbing a win during the 2020 season, Johnson took the shot put title at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Feb. 13 in Albuquerque, posting a top mark of 19.44 meters (63-9.50), the first indoor win of his career.

Normal policies dictate that All-America honors are awarded based on classifications of performance at the NCAA Championships.

Due to the cancellation of the 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, the NCAA Division I Track & Field Executive Committee adopted the following criteria for awarding All-America honors:

  • Based on the post-medical scratches startlist for the national championships posted on Wednesday, March 11 at 9:24 p.m., local, the following will be recognized as All-America for the 2020 indoor track & field season:
    • Individual events: ALL student-athletes listed on the startlist for the anticipated event.
    • Relay events: The four student-athletes per anticipated relay who produced the performance that was declared and accepted into their event. Those listed as alternates will not be recognized.
  • There will not be a distinction of "first-team", "second-team", or "honorable mention" to these recognitions.
