MPSF Postpones Men’s Water Polo Season

Decision Follows Pac-12’s Postponement Of 2020 Competitions

WOODLAND, Calif. – The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) has postponed its men's water polo season through the 2020 calendar year, based on the decisions to postpone all fall sports by the Pac-12 Conference as well as Austin College and Penn State Behrend.

Cal is one of six programs that competes in MPSF men's water polo, joining Stanford, UCLA, USC, Austin College and Penn State Behrend. The NCAA's pending decision regarding fall championships, to be determined by August 21, will determine how MPSF men's water polo moves forward, which includes the potential to compete in the winter or spring of 2021.

"Given the dynamic nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fluidity of containment efforts, it is absolutely necessary that the MPSF collaborate with the greater community to minimize the spread and overall impact of the virus," the MPSF release stated. "As always, the MPSF remains committed to the safety and well-being of its student-athletes, campus staff, and all others who contribute to the conference."

Statement from Cal Men's Water Polo Head Coach Kirk Everist:
"We are all very disappointed in the postponement of the season. This is obviously very hard on our student-athletes, but they are a great group of young men and they will be ready to go when we are given the green light."

Joint Statement from Chancellor Carol Christ and Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton (From Aug. 11):
"We are aligned in our support for the Pac-12's decision to postpone fall sports. While the decision was difficult, it is consistent with our shared commitment to the health and well-being of Cal's student-athletes, coaches and staff. Our hearts go out to the student-athletes who will not have the opportunity to compete this fall. We are incredibly proud of how they have been navigating the disappointments and uncertainties surrounding their athletic pursuits, and we will do all that we can to support them during these difficult times. We look forward to the day when they will be able to, once again, train for and compete in the sports they love. We look forward to the day when we can, together with members of Cal's extended family, once again cheer them on as they pursue excellence on the field of play."
