TEMPE, Ariz. – Matt Bradley and
Andre Kelly both posted double-doubles and California hung with Arizona State despite a slow start to the game, but the Sun Devils held on down the stretch for a 72-68 win Thursday at Desert Financial Arena.
Â
Bradley finished with 26 points – one point shy of his personal best – and a career-high-tying 10 rebounds for his sixth 20-point game of the season and first since Dec. 31 at Oregon. Kelly, meanwhile, added 16 points and a career-best 13 boards. No other Golden Bear reached double figures.
Â
Cal out-rebounded ASU, 43-29, with the Bears' 15 offensive boards a season high.
Â
Remy Martin paced the Sun Devils with 19 points, as ASU won its seventh straight game in the series. Jalen Graham added 12 points with Josh Christopher contributing 11.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cal started slowly, making just two of its first 14 shots from the floor and falling behind, 17-5, beforeÂ
Ryan Betley hit a 3-pointer. The Bears got back into the game with a 9-0 run that closed a 25-13 deficit to 25-22. When Kelly scored off a feed fromÂ
Jalen Celestine, Cal took a 30-29 lead to cap a half-ending 17-4 run. The Bears had 12 offensive rebounds in the opening period and held ASU without a field goal the final 3:19 of the half.
Â
The Sun Devils came out of the break by making back-to-back 3-pointers to take back the lead. Cal, though, used a 7-0 spurt to move in front, 48-47, on a pair of Bradley free throws. ASU later went ahead for good on a layup by Marcus Bagley with 8:03 left. The Bears kept within striking distance, but went more than five minutes without a field goal down the stretch and couldn't make enough free throws to keep pace.
