Rugby Announces Fall 7s Slate
The Golden Bears Are Set To Compete In Two Fall Tournaments
BERKELEY – California rugby has its eyes set on a pair of 7s tournaments in the fall of 2021. The Golden Bears will compete at the West Coast Collegiate 7s at Cal Poly on October 9 and then will host the PAC Rugby 7s Championship November 6-7 at Witter Rugby Field.
"We are happy to be back together as a team," head coach Jack Clark said. "We are off to a good training start and the players are really applying themselves. The vibe feels good."
Over the past five weeks, the Bears have been training three times per week, splitting time between strength training in the Simpson Center for Student-Athlete High Performance and rugby instruction at Witter Rugby Field. On the pitch, Cal has balanced focusing on 7s and XVs with two thirds of the team concentrating their efforts on the sevens squad while the other third trains XVs.
The Bears will send two sides of 15 players each on their trip to Cal Poly on October 9 which will feature a full day of games. The 30 7s players will then be whittled down to 15 individuals who will represent Cal at the PAC Rugby 7s Championship November 6-7. The eight-team tournament will consist of 20 games over two days – all of which will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
After their fall tournaments, the Bears will commence preparations for the spring XVs season. Cal will then conclude its fall trainings on December 3 ahead of Reading Week which commences on December 6 and semester finals beginning the week of December 13.
