Cal Celebrates its 17 Members of the U.S. Rugby Hall of Fame

Mike MacDonald Became The Latest Member During Friday’s Induction Ceremony In Las Vegas

BERKELEY – Since its inception in 1882, Cal Athletics' oldest and most successful intercollegiate sport has had scores of student-athletes compete in the blue and gold. Among their ranks are 17 individuals who have become enshrined in the U.S. Rugby Hall of Fame.

The latest member of the Cal rugby program to enter the hall is Mike MacDonald, an All-American, and four-time collegiate national champion who went on to have a successful career with the U.S. national team and professionally in the United Kingdom before coaching the Golden Bears for nine years. He was formally inducted at a ceremony at the Luxor Resort in Las Vegas on Friday, October 29. Cal rugby is currently led by two hall of famers and former USA Rugby National Team head coaches as the Bears' Head Coach Jack Clark and Associate Head Coach Tom Billups were inducted in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

The remainder of the list hosts many big names including the Bears' former head coach Miles "Doc" Hudson who led the program from 1938-74 and Colby "Babe" Slater, a two-time Olympic gold medalist. Another recent inductee is Rick Bailey, a member of Cal rugby from 1974-77, a participant in the USA's inaugural World Cup Team in 1987, a Craig Sweeney Award recipient and an assistant coach at Cal from 1991-94 where he led the Bears to four national championships. Other members to join the hall of fame in the past decade include Time O'Brien (2017) and Pat Vincent (2011). The remaining members were a part of USA's Olympic gold-medal teams in 1920 (George Davis, George Fish, Matt Hazeltine, Charles Mehan, Charles Tilden and James Winston) and 1924 (Ed Graff, George Dixon and Ed Turkington).
