BERKELEY – The gates of Witter Rugby Field will  reopen to fans for the first time in more than 600 days this weekend as the Golden Bears will host the 2021 PAC Rugby 7s Championship in Strawberry Canyon. The eight-team tournament will take place November 6-7 with matches beginning at 11:05am each day.

The tournament schedule is as follows:

Each team will compete in three pool games on Saturday before heading into Sunday's knockout rounds. All eight teams will compete in either the shield or cup semifinals in the morning before the final matches in the afternoon.

The Golden Bears' roster is a follows:
Nick Bloom (senior), Jake Broekhuizen (senior), Alex Brundage (junior), Jack Casey (junior), Max Clark (junior), Luke Freeman (senior), Sam Golla (fifth year senior), Cal Liebowitz (junior), Kealan O'Connell (freshman), Henry Poon (senior), Seth Purdey (fifth year senior), Nate Salter (junior), Kevin Saunders (fifth year senior), Max Schumacher (junior), Marcus Shankland (fifth year senior), Sam Walsh (senior), Nathan Zylstra (senior)

This will be the Bears' second and final tournament of the fall. On October 9, Cal swept the Cal Poly 7s tournament, winning with an 8-0 record. The Bears named to the roster for this weekend are responsible for 24 of the 29 tries scored in San Luis Obispo while junior Max Clark led the team with five. A notable return to the team is fifth-year Marcus Shankland who will play in his first contest after coming back from an injury sustained last spring. Furthermore, senior Sam Walsh returns to Berkeley from Uruguay after competing with the U.S. junior national team in the Americas Pacific Challenge.

The Bears are the top seed in this weekend's tournament and are in search of their eighth 7s conference title; since the inception of the PAC 7s Championship, Cal has won seven of the eight tournaments. Their one loss in the final came in 2017 to Arizona. The Bears have faced the Wildcats in the Cup Final in each of the past three years. Cal is already familiar with Arizona and UCLA from the Cal Poly Tournament, going 4-0 against both teams after defeating each team twice.

Cal has won five 7s collegiate national championships since the game's inaugural championship tournament at the collegiate level in 2010. The Bears won five straight from 2013-2017. No tournament was held in 2020 or 2021 due to COVID-19.
