The No. 8 Cal women's water polo team plays its home opener Saturday when it hosts No. 16 San Jose State at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Under Pac-12 Conference guidance and local public health protocols in Alameda and San Joaquin counties, no fans are permitted to attend. Live stats will be available for the game. This will be the first contest of the season the Bears haven't played a team from Fresno, as they have defeated No. 11 Fresno State twice and also beat Fresno Pacific. This is the season-opener for the Spartans.

BEAR NECESSITIES
MULDER NAMED MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior
Brigit Mulder was named MPSF Player of the Week on Tuesday after leading Cal to an 11-9 overtime win against No. 11 Fresno State last Saturday. She scored three goals, her final two tying the game in regulation. Mulder scored with 5:56 to play to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 9-8 and then converted again with five seconds remaining to tie the score. She also added two steals and three earned exclusions. Mulder is a two-time ACWPC All-American, including last season when she earned First Team accolades.
FRESHMEN MAKE IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Cal's freshmen class has played a big role in the team's success through the first three games of the season. The eight-player group has accounted for 45 percent of the Bears' scoring, including a co-team-high six goals by
Maryn Dempsey.
Mallory Reynoso has scored three goals, including a crucial one in overtime to help Cal defeat Fresno State last weekend.
Reagan Whitney and
Juliette Zamoyski each scored four goals in the Bears' victory over Fresno Pacific.
GOALIE BUSINESS

Cassidy Ball and sophomore
Isabel Williams have combined to slam the door on Cal opponents so far this season. The duo has allowed just 17 goals in three games while combining for 34 saves. Ball earned ACWPC All-American Honorable Mention last season and ranks ninth on the program's all-time list with 209 career saves.
STEADY SONNE
After surging during the second half of her sophomore season,
Claire Sonne became a bona fide star last year. She was named an ACWPC Third Team All-American after recording 25 goals and 19 assists and finishing in the top-10 in three MPSF statistical categories. Sonne also is a terrific student, having earned ACWPC All-Academic Oustanding recognition in each of her first three seasons at Cal.
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION UPDATE
Former Cal four-time All-American Anna "Nusi" Illes took center stage last month, helping Hungary win the Olympic Qualification Tournament. Illes scored nine goals during the tournament, aidng Hungary to nab an automatic berth to the Olympics when it qualified for the championship match. In the finals, Hungary defeated The Netherlands, which also earned a bid to the Summer Games. Senior
Kitty Lynn Joustra was scheduled to compete for The Netherlands at the tournament but suffered an injury shortly before the event and was unable to play. Cal alum
Dora Antal, a fellow four-time All-American and the Bears' all-time leading scorer, was an alternate for Hungary.Â
TRIO OF BEARS LEAD CANADA TO OLYMPICS

Emma Wright and alums
Kindred Paul and Kelly McKee helped Team Canada qualify for the Olympics by advancing to the championship match of the 2019 Pan American Games. Wright, a three-time All-American who ranks ninth on the program's all-time scoring list with 154 career goals, took the 2020 season off to train with the Canadian National Team and is doing the same this season since the Olympics were suspended for a year. Paul and McKee were both All-Americans at Cal.
