No. 2 California Defeats UCLA, USC

LOS ANGELES - The California men's water polo team (4-2, 4-2 MSPF) earned two wins in its first road test of the season, defeating UCLA and USC by the same final score of 11-8 Saturday at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

The Bears, Bruins and Trojans are all tied for No. 2 in the latest CWPA top 25.

Sophomore Nikolaos Papanikolaou led the Bears on offense once again, finishing the day with six goals. Adrian Weinberg anchored the cage for California in both matches, recording a combined 26 saves on the day.

MATCH #1: No. 2 California 11, No. 2 UCLA 8
The Bruins (3-3, 2-3 MPSF) got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter before George Avakian and Nikos Delagrammatikas each scored to tie things up at 2-2. Both teams traded goals back-and-forth for the remainder of the match, finishing regulation at an 8-8 tie. 

Team captain Nikos Delagrammatikas scored twice in a row in the first overtime period, and Jack Deely added one more goal in the final three minutes to seal the win for the Bears.

Deely and Delagrammatikas led the Bears in scoring with three goals apiece. Deely added two assists to finish with five points. Weinberg had 13 saves (61.9 percent) and one steal in the effort.

Nicolas Saveljic and Jake Cavano led the Bruins in scoring with two goals each.

MATCH #2: No. 2 California 11, No. 2 USC 8
The Bears struck early and often in the first two quarters against the home team, heading into halftime with a 5-1 lead over the Trojans. Freshman Tommy Kennedy scored the fourth goal for Cal, marking his first collegiate goal.

After Cal pulled ahead 9-4 in the third quarter, USC scored three consecutive goals to start the final period, bringing the score to 9-7 in favor of the Bears. Joe Molina and Garrett Dunn each scored one more goal to secure the win for Cal.

Papanikolaous' four goals led the Bears. The sophomore also added four steals in the match. Dunn finished with two goals, two assists and two steals. 

Alexander Lansil and Jacob Mercep each scored two goals for the Trojans.

The Bears finish their weekend in Los Angeles on Sunday against No. 1 Stanford at 3:30 p.m. The match will be streamed here.
