No. 2 Cal Finishes 3-0 On The Weekend, Defeats Stanford For First Time Since 2017

LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 California men's water polo team put on an offensive showcase, defeating No. 1 Stanford, 16-11, Sunday afternoon at USC's Uytengsu Aquatic Center.

With the win, the Bears (5-2, 5-2 MPSF) finished 3-0 on the weekend after defeating UCLA and USC on Saturday. It was Cal's first win against Stanford (1-2, 1-2 MPSF) since winning 10-9 over its rival in the quarterfinals of the 2017 MPSF Championship.

After finishing the first quarter tied 3-3, the Bears scored seven goals in the second quarter to head into halftime with a 10-6 lead. 

Eight players scored for Cal, led by junior Jack Deely, who had four goals. Through the first seven games of the season, Deely has 10 goals and 11 assists (21 points). 

Sophomore Garrett Dunn finished with three goals and three assists to lead all players with six points. Also recording multiple goals for the Bears were sophomore Nikolaos Papanikolaou and freshman Tommy Kennedy with two apiece. Kennedy added two assists for a career-high four points in the match. 

Fellow freshman Alika Naone had another impressive showing, finishing with one goal and three assists (four points). 

Sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg held down the cage for the Bears again, recording a season-high 15 saves (57.7 percent) and holding Stanford to a season-low 11 goals.
