Cal Women’s Gymnastics Will Honor George, Kuc, Salem, Schank And Watterson On Sunday
BERKELEY – The sixth-ranked California women's gymnastics team will compete in Haas Pavilion for the final time during the 2021 season as they host Washington on Sunday afternoon. It will be the second time that Cal takes on Washington this week, after the Bears defeated the Huskies, 197.225-196.525, on Wednesday afternoon in Seattle.
The Bears will honor
Kyana George,
Alma Kuc,
Victoria Salem,
Nina Schank and
Emi Watterson on Sunday. The quintet has helped the Cal women's gymnastics program rise into a national powerhouse, moving up to sixth in the national rankings, the highest Cal has ever been ranked.
George was a 2020 WCGA Regular Season Second Team All-American and earned All-Pac-12 honors in the all-around, vault and balance beam. Schank is a two-time WCGA Scholastic All-American and an All-Pac-12 performer on the uneven bars. Watterson is a multi-time All-Pac-12 honoree for her uneven bars work while also a Pac-12 All-Academic honoree and she just recorded the fourth-ever 10.0 score in program history last week vs. UCLA. Kuc is a Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention selection and has been part of the team's bars lineup throughout her Cal tenure. Salem has battled injuries throughout her Cal tenure, but has been an instrumental part of the team.

RECORD BREAKING BARS ROUTINE
Cal tied an NCAA record with a 49.825 score on the uneven bars in the win over UCLA. It tied a 2004 mark by UCLA as the best by any uneven bars rotation in NCAA history. All six gymnasts posted a 9.900 or higher, including three of the top five uneven bars scores in school history.
Emi Watterson posted a perfect 10.
Andi Li and
Maya Bordas both posted 9.975 scores, joining Watterson's 2020 routine as the only three Bears to hit that standard.
Nina Schank tied a career-high with a 9.950.
Alma Kuc posted a 9.925 score in her first competitive action of the year. The Bears had to drop
Nevaeh DeSouza's 9.90 rated routine. Cal is now ranked number one in the nation on the uneven bars.
PROGRAM HISTORY ON BEAM
Cal has recorded two of the top three beam scores in program history over the last two weeks. Cal posted a 49.450 on the road at Utah, which at the time was the second-best score on beam. However, Cal bettered that mark in their very next meet, setting a program record on the beam with a 49.500 score in their win over UCLA.
Emi Watterson had a career-high 9.95, also the highest score any Bear has ever earned on the event.
Nevaeh DeSouza,
Kyana George and
Maya Bordas all recorded 9.900 marks on beam vs. the Bruins.
RECORD BREAKING MEET
The Bears posted the best team score in program history with a 198.050 in the win over UCLA on March 6. That shattered the previous school-best of 197.675, which Cal recorded at the 2019 NCAA Regionals. The Bears did it with a NCAA Record bars score of 49.825, a program-record on beam of 49.500, the third-best floor score of 49.500 and a vault lineup that posted a 49.225. It was also only the sixth time that Cal defeated the Bruins and the first since 2016. The Bears have only won three times over UCLA since 1992, including this year's meet.
CAL MOVES UP TO SIXTH
The Bears moved up to sixth in the NQS rankings after their record-breaking performance vs. UCLA. That is the highest ranking the Bears have ever received, previously finishing seventh in 2016. Cal is tied with Florida for the top uneven bars squad in the country. The Bears are also ranked seventh in the balance beam while also boasting top-15 marks on the vault (11th) and floor exercise (15).
PERFECT 10
Emi Watterson posted the fourth-ever perfect 10.0 in program history in Cal's win over UCLA and the second on bars. Cindy Tom recorded the only other Perfect 10 on bars when she recorded the mark on February 15, 1992. Toni-Ann Williams recorded two 10.0 vaults during her Cal career. Watterson's exploits on bars, including wearing a mask for the entire routine, has been featured on numerous national outlets including The Today Show, People, PopSugar and NBC Sports Bay Area. She was named Pac-12 Specialist of the Week for her efforts, which also included a career-best 9.95 score on beam.
GEORGE CONTINUES WINNING WAYS
Kyana George has 10 event victories during the 2021 season to bring her career total to 37. She has four wins on the floor exercise this year as she has posted at least a 9.875 in ever meet this year, including four over 9.900 and two at 9.95. She now has 87 top-three finishes in her career and 37 of the team's 102 career first-place finishes. George also recorded a 39.650 in Cal's meet at Oregon State to tie the third-best all-around score in program history.
