Cal Quartet Earns All-America Status On First Day Of NCAA Championships
GREENSBORO, N.C. – California kicked off the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships by placing second in the 800-yard freestyle relay Wednesday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The quartet of
Trenton Julian,
Daniel Carr,
Destin Lasco and
Bryce Mefford finished in 6:08.68, earning All-America status and 34 points for Cal in the lone event of the night. Julian led off, swimming the first 200 yards in 1:31.41 to lower his own second-best mark in school history. Carr (1:33.14), Lasco (1:32.13) and Mefford (1:32.00) completed the relay.

Texas won the event in 6:07.25 to claim 40 points. Cal finished two seconds ahead of the rest of the field, as Texas A&M (6:10.79), Florida (6:10.91) and NC State (6:12.06) rounded out the top five.

UP NEXT
The NCAA Championships continue Thursday with morning qualifying starting at 7 a.m. PT in the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free events. Finals for all three individual events as well as the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay start at 3 p.m. PT. All sessions will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
