Bears Advance To MPSF Championship
No. 1 Cal Defeats No. 4 USC In Conference Semifinal
LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 California men's water polo team defeated No. 4 USC 11-8 on Saturday to advance to the MPSF Championship game. The Bears will take on No. 2 Stanford in the title game Sunday at 2 p.m, when Cal (8-3, 8-3 MPSF) will look to win its first conference title since 2006.Â
The Trojans (5-8, 3-7 MPSF) took an early lead in the match, going ahead 2-0 in the first two minutes before team captain
Nikos Delagrammatikas got the Bears on the board. After USC scored again,
Garrett Dunn,
George Avakian and
Mateus Stellet scored in quick succession to give the Bears the lead, which Cal would retain for the remainder of the game.
Jack Deely led the Bears with five points, scoring one goal and assisting on four others.
Nikolaos Papanikolaou,
Alika Naone and Avakian each scored twice in the effort.
Goalkeeper
Adrian Weinberg had seven saves and two assists in the match.
