Kyana George Named WCGA Regional Gymnast Of The Year
Cal Women’s Gymnastics Senior Adds To List Of Accolades
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Cal senior gymnast
Kyana George has been piling up awards this year, and she added another on Tuesday as she was named the Region 6 Gymnast of the Year by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association.
George is one of six regional winners announced Tuesday after a vote of the coaches in the region.
This year, George was the Pac-12 Champion on the floor exercise, a two-time Pac-12 weekly award winner this year and a finalist for the AAI Award for top senior gymnast in the country. George is also a Regular Season All-American on the floor exercise. The senior has won 16 events this year (2 vault, 4 beam, 8 floor and 2 all-around) and collected 29 top-three finishes. She now has 96 top-three finishes and 42 wins in her four-year career.
She is ranked first in the region on vault, second on balance beam and fifth on vault. She is still ranked fourth in the all-around and 19th on uneven bars despite not competing on the bars during the second half of the season due to a lingering injury.
George has posted a 9.875 or above on the floor exercise in all 10 competitions this year, including eight at 9.90+ and six at 9.95+, including her last five in a row. She set a career high 9.975 at the event on senior day, tying for the best score ever recorded on the event by a Cal gymnast, which also helped Cal set a school record floor score of 49.575 that afternoon vs. Washington.
On beam, George scored a 9.90 for five straight competitions, one of which helped the team break the school record with a 49.500 performance vs. UCLA. George has 17 scores at 9.90+ this year and posted a career-best 39.650 in the all-around at Oregon State, which was the top all-around score by any gymnast in the region this year. Her consistent excellence has propelled Cal to a No. 5 overall ranking, the best in program history, a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championship, the best-ever finish for the Bears and a berth at the NCAA Championship.
Cal will be one of eight teams headed to the NCAA Gymnastics Championship, which will be held on April 16-17 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
