Cal Rugby To Host BYU In First of Three Spring Matches
The Golden Bears Will Face The Cougars on Saturday, April 10 At Noon
BERKELEY – California rugby will compete at Witter Rugby Field this Saturday, April 10 for the first time since defeating Army 62-22 on March 7, 2020. The Golden Bears have tentatively scheduled three matches this spring against BYU, Saint Mary's and Arizona.
Â
"I'm just pleased we get to play," head coach Jack Clark said. "There was no certainty this would occur this spring and here we are, with the privilege of playing the game we love. We have so much gratitude towards our University for helping us get to this point. Not only do we get to play, we get to play BYU, who, per usual, is impressive. As undercooked as our boys are, they are excited for this opportunity."

Facing the Bears this weekend will be Brigham Young. The Cougars are 1-0-1 this year with a victory over Utah State (55-14) on March 27 and a tie against Central Washington (27-27) on March 20. BYU has a talented team led by Australian Seen Tarawhiti who also captains the Cougars. The senior flanker made the all-conference first team in 2018 and 2019 and has started both matches this season. BYU starts a massive front row weighing in at a combined 755 pounds. The Parry brothers anchor the back line connection with Dylan at half back and Wyatt at flyhalf. The last time the Bears and Cougars went head-to-head was May 8, 2016 when Cal defeated BYU 40-29 to claim the 2016 Penn Mutual Varsity Cup national championship. Tarawhiti is the only Cougar who was on the roster that game.
Â
Cal will be without the services of
Henry Poon who is studying this semester from home and All-American
Jack Manzo who is out with injury. Returning to the Bears' lineup after a year out with injury is
Sam Walsh who will start at flyhalf and, together with senior halfback
Ken Kurihara, will direct a fairly experienced back line. Cal will be led in the forwards by the versatile
Sam Golla, expected to start in the second row. Having not played in 397 days, Cal will hope to find its spring 2020 form when the Bears were ranked No. 1 in the country before the season was prematurely ended.
