Joyner, Wise Lead Bears On Final Day At Pac-12 Championships
Joyner Third In Men's Discus, Wise Fourth In Women's 100-Meter Hurdles
LOS ANGELES – California track & field closed out the Pac-12 Championships with a third-place finish in the men's discus throw from
Iffy Joyner and notched top-10 finishes on the track Sunday at Cromwell Field & Loker Stadium.
Joyner started the day strong for the Bears by earning a bronze medal with a mark of 55.15 meters (180-11) after he took fifth in the discus at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships.
Josh Johnson added three more team points, coming in sixth-place behind a mark of 54.26 meters (178-0).
Cal tallied 48 points on the women's side to finish ninth and the men totaled 31 points during the three-day conference event to take 10
th.
Facing a field of top competition,
Deshae Wise stood tall as she clocked 13.26 in the women's 100-meter hurdle final to finish in fourth-place and earn five team points for Cal.
Ezinne Abba went against a pair of loaded fields in the women's sprint finals. She tied her lifetime best set in the prelims of the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.51 to take sixth-place and placed seventh in the 200-meters, behind a time of 23.74 seconds.
Making her Pac-12 track & field championships debut,
Hawa Wague left her mark with a top clearance of 1.75 meters (5-8.75) for a fifth-place finish in the women's high jump competition. In the triple jump,
Asha Fletcher came in seventh-place with a best leap of 12.88 meters (42-3.25).
The Bears turned in a pair of top-10 finishes in the women's discus throw, led by
Jasmine Blair in sixth-place. She posted a farthest mark of 51.44 meters (168-9) and
Krissy Smoot took seventh thanks to a top heave of 49.39 meters (162-0).
Garrett MacQuiddy continued his strong rookie campaign with the Golden Bears as he crossed the line in 3:44.97 to take ninth in the men's 1,500-meters, finishing just off his personal record in the event.
Moises Medrano ran a good race in the men's 800-meter final for a seventh-place finish with a time of 1:51.24.
Up Next: The Bears have a week off before traveling to College Station, Texas for the NCAA West Regional May 26-29.
