OMAHA, Neb. – Four California men's swimmers were officially named to the 2021 U.S. Olympic team roster Sunday night following the conclusion of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials Wave II. The quartet will compete alongside the other 49 members of the U.S. swim squad at the Olympic Games Tokyo starting July 24.
 
Leading the way is three-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy, who will become the first American since Aaron Peirsol (2004, 2008) to swim the 100-meter backstroke and 200m back events at two consecutive Olympic Games after winning both events at Trials last week. Bryce Mefford will join Murphy in the 200m back as a first-time Olympian. It will be the second straight Olympic Games that Cal has represented the U.S. in the men's 200m back, as Jacob Pebley joined Murphy in Rio in 2016.
 
Fellow first-time Olympian Andrew Seliskar will swim on the U.S. 4x200m freestyle relay squad following his fourth-place finish in the 200 free at Trials. Rounding out the Cal quartet is Tom Shields, who took second-place in the 100m butterfly at Trials to earn a spot on his second consecutive U.S. Olympic roster. Murphy and Shields swam for the U.S. at the 2016 Olympic Games Rio, bringing home a combined four gold medals.
 
The U.S. Olympic swim team opens training camp June 27 in Hawaii. The camp will include a virtual media day on Thursday, July 8 (details to follow). The Olympic Games pool competition will take place July 24-August 1 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, followed by the Aug. 4-5 open water events at the Odaiba Marine Park.
