The water was once again good to Cal Olympians.

Golden Bears picked up 16 medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and all but two came from water sports. There were seven medals in swimming, five in rowing and two in women's water polo.

Fifty-eight athletes and coaches affiliated with Cal descended on Tokyo for the Summer Games, including swimmer Ryan Murphy, who added three more medals to his collection. A three-time gold medalist at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Murphy added his fourth career gold medal as part of the Team USA's world-record-setting 4x100-meter relay. Murphy also took the silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke and the bronze in the 100 backstroke.

On the women's side, Abbey Weitzeil also captured multiple medals – the silver in the 400 medley relay and the bronze in the 400 free relay. The 2020 Cal graduate now has four career medals after also winning two at the 2016 Summer Games.

The Sea Forest Waterway near Central Tokyo was kind to Cal rowers, especially on the women's side where Golden Bears secured three medals, including two golds. Sydney Payne helped Canada win the gold medal in the women's eight while Rosemary Popa and her Australian boat tasted victory in the women's four. Two-time Olympian Caileigh Filmer also helped Canada take the bronze medal in the women's pair.

The men won two bronze medals in rowing, with Joachim Sutton placing third in the men's pair for Denmark and Jack Cleary doing the same in the quadruple sculls for Australia.

Former Cal women's water polo standout Roser Tarrago cemented her Olympic legacy by helping Spain win the silver medal – the second of her career in her third Olympic Games. Four-time All-American Anna Illes won the bronze with Hungary after placing fourth in 2016.

Golden Bears have now accumulated 223 total medals all-time, dating back to the 1920 Summer Games in Antwerp, Belgium.
