Everist Notches 400th Career Victory
No. 4 Bears Defeat No. 8 UC Davis, No. 11 San Jose State
DAVIS – Earning 400 career wins isn't easy. Wins No. 399 and 400 proved just that.
Cal men's water polo head coach
Kirk Everist reached the lofty landmark Saturday with a pair of hard-fought victories over No. 8 UC Davis and No. 11 San Jose State at the Aggie Shootout. The No. 4 Bears beat the Aggies 14-11 and the Spartans 11-9 to put Everist over the edge.
In his 20
th season leading the Golden Bears, Everist now has a career record of 400-123, including a perfect 9-0 record so far this season.
"As you get older, you have to celebrate the small accomplishments," Everist said. "A lot of people play a part in this. It's a lot of memories of different guys, and a testimony to the success they've had. It's nice to take a second to be happy with that and celebrate it, and it's nice for the guys to get into it."
Moments after the Bears wrapped up their victory over San Jose State, Cal's players dumped a Gatorade tub of water over Everist and presented him with the game ball.
Cal beat UC Davis behind a strong fourth quarter and excellent goalkeeping by junior
Adrian Weinberg. Trailing 10-9 with just over a minute left in the third quarter, the Bears proceeded to score five unanswered goals while keeping the Aggies scoreless for over eight minutes. Senior Miles O'Brien Schridde, junior
Nikolaos Papanikolaou and freshman
Max Casabella each registered a hat trick for Cal while Weinberg came up with 15 saves. Papanikolaou also earned a whopping eight exclusions.
"When (Weinberg) gets going, he's tough," Everist said. "He has a good presence in the cage. He has a lot of confidence and can get into shooters' heads. They start to think they have to have a perfect shot every time. It's nice to have him anchoring the defense."
The Bears held on to beat the Spartans despite having to kill off 16 power plays. San Jose State was just 1-for-16 with the man advantage while Cal was 2-for-8.
Freshman
Roberto Valera had three goals for the Bears while Casabella, O'Brien-Schridde and Papanikolaou each added two more. Weinberg made 12 more saves.
Valera and Casabella each scored five goals on the day, while Valera added two assists against the Aggies. The Spaniards are making their Cal debuts this weekend after missing the first six games of the season while competing at the FINA Junior World Championships. They each played their first game Friday after participating in just two practices with the Bears.
"They definitely give us another couple of offensive options," Everist said. "We're getting used to them. They are getting a rhythm with the rest of the team. It was nice to get them going in games where some of the goals they scored were meaningful."
The Bears finish off the Aggie Shootout on Sunday when they face off against No. 7 Pacific.
