PULLMAN, Wash. – Jordan Shepherd scored a game-high 17 points and
Andre Kelly tallied his seventh double-double of the season, but the California men's basketball team took a 65-57 loss to Washington State at Beasley Coliseum on Saturday.
Â
Kelly had 12 points and 14 rebounds – one shy of his career best – in his double-double effort. Shepherd shot 6-12 from the field including three 3-pointers en route to 17 points.
Jalen Celestine added nine points while
Grant Anticevich and
Kuany Kuany had six apiece.
Â
Cal (9-9, 2-5 Pac-12) entered the locker room at halftime with a 29-27 advantage after holding the Cougars (10-7, 3-3) to just 1-10 shooting from behind the arc. The Golden Bears would keep Washington State to 6-22 on 3-point attempts overall, but allowed 16 second-chance points including nine in the second half.
Â
Normally a strong defensive rebounding team, Cal gave up 14 offensive rebounds to the Cougars throughout the contest and was outrebounded 39-32 overall despite Kelly's impressive individual effort.
Â
"We just didn't defensive rebound," Cal head coach
Mark Fox said. "We didn't handle the zone very well, but I thought we had some interior looks that we didn't take advantage of. At the end of the day, our defensive rebounding in the second half let us down; we forced enough misses, we competed really hard, but we just didn't do the right things to close the game in the second half."
Â
The Golden Bears shot 39.6 percent (21-53) from the floor and 25 percent (5-20) from 3-point range. The game saw 11 lead changes, with neither team taking a two-possession lead until WSU's Noah Williams' bucket put the Cougars up 51-47 with 7:06 left in the contest.
Â
It was Cal's fourth consecutive loss after a five-game win streak from Dec. 8-Jan. 2.
