LOS ANGELES – California rugby opened the Dennis Storer Classic on Saturday, defeating both UC Santa Cruz (29-0) and Cal Poly (33-3) to open the tournament with a pair of victories.
 
Cal held both the Banana Slugs and the Mustangs out of its try zone and overall looked dangerous in attack, maintaining possession throughout the majority of both contests. As the Bears shook off some early-season rust, there were a number of solid performances.
 
One example is senior Luke Ogburn who saw time in both of Saturday's matches and earned a start against UCSC.
 
"It feels good to be back in season," Ogburn said. "Overall, I was happy with our strong attack, but tonight we need to sit down, prepare a game plan and discuss how we want to organize for tomorrow's game."
 
Nine Bears combined for 10 tries on Saturday including senior Jake Shiff who scored twice against UC Santa Cruz. Nine players also made their Cal XVs debut including freshmen David Hause and Ryan Marshall and sophomores Caleb Tomasin, Will Shankland, Dom Paga, Brett Dowgiewicz, Evan Weigold, Emilio Shea and Josh Mao.
 
The Bears will close out the Dennis Storer Classic on Sunday when they return to Wallis Annenberg Stadium to play UCLA at 1:10pm.
