Cal won the weekend on Treasure Island, its second tournament title of the fall sevens season.
SAN FRANCISCO – California rugby takes home its second tournament title of the fall sevens season after day two of the West Coast Collegiate Sevens on Treasure Island. The program previously won the WCC7s at Cal Poly on Oct. 8.
Â
Both of Cal's sides – Cal I and Cal II, which is a developmental side of the program – competed in quarterfinal matches today after sweeping their respective pools on day one.
Â
Cal I faced SDSU and handed them a 35-0 to open the second day of competition.
Kealan O'Connell found the tryzone just thirty seconds into the match, continuing Cal's pattern of early scoring that was consistent throughout the weekend. O'Connell also went 5-for-5 on conversions in the match.
Â
Cal II went head-to-head with fellow PAC conference school UCLA for their quarterfinal match. The freshmen dominated the scoresheet, with
Oliver Newall scoring a try and
Solomon Williams and
Cormac Saint each contributing a pair of tries as well. Saint also converted two of those to make the final score 29-14 against the Bruins.
Â
With both of Cal's sides advancing to the next round, the two squads found themselves slated to play each other in the semifinals. The Bears played a low-impact game of rugby in the peculiar matchup, and Cal I advanced to the Cup Finals. Cal II was slated to meet USD in  a third-place consolation, but both sides elected to not contest the match.
Â
Cal I battled Arizona for the tournament title in the final match of the day. Just thirty seconds into the match Arizona was issued a red card for a tip tackle, forcing the Wildcats to play a man down for the remainder of the match.
Â
The Bears were first to put points on the board when
Alex Aguero touched down just one minute in. Arizona responded with a try of their own two minutes later. Both scores were converted successfully and the score was equalized at 7-7 as they reached the halfway point of the first seven minutes. Cal soon pulled ahead with
Max Clark and
Rand Santos each contributing a try a-piece, both converted by O'Connell, bringing the score to 21-7 at the intermission.
Â
Arizona found the tryzone first in the second half and converted the score to close in on the Bears' advantage. A few minutes later,
Caleb Tomasin caught the pill and got past the Wildcats on a quick switch-up that cleared the way for him to touch down right in the middle of the posts to close out the game. The final score was 33-14 and it was the only match in which Cal I conceded any points in competition.
Â
O'Connell was named Tournament MVP for his efforts on the pitch over the two-day event. O'Connell logged eight tries and 14 conversions to make 68 total points contributed this weekend.
Â
There were 20 different try-scorers between the two squads on Treasure Island. The Bears totaled 369 points scored against opposing schools, excluding the 41 points that were collected by the Bears' two squads when they played each other in the semifinals. Cal only allowed 47 combined points to be scored against them in their 11 matches facing other programs.
Â
The Bears will now turn their focus to the conference sevens championships, the final tournament of the autumn season. The PAC 7s tournament, hosted at Stanford, will take place over the weekend of Nov. 12-13 and will be aired on the Pac-12 Network.
