Cal Closes Cross Country Season At NCAA West Regionals
Men Take 21st, Women 23rd In The Season Finale
UNIVERSITY PLACE, WASH. – California men's and women's cross country teams closed out their fall season at the NCAA West Regionals in University Place, Wash. on Friday morning. The men's team takes home 21st place, while the women's collects 23rd-place and numerous personal records.
The full results from the meet can be found here.
"We raced about as well as we could have today," Cal head coach Bobby Lockhart said. "Six women ran lifetime bests and we had some unexpected surprises step up given the sickness the men's team has been dealing with this season. I'm proud of how they attacked the race and gave their best effort – that's all you can ask for as a coach."
Georgia McCorkle broke the top-100 on the women's side, racing the 6,000-meters in 20:57.2, her personal-best mark of her freshman campaign. Claire Yerby also set a personal record, finishing in 20:57.5. This is the second time this season Yerby has set a personal-best, with her previous record being set at the Santa Clara Bronco Invite when she finished in 20:58.0.
Natalie Weiner, Emilie Barrett and Kalinda Reynolds continued the pattern of personal bests for the Bears. Weiner raced the course in 21:17.8 while Barrett shaved 15 seconds off of her personal record, completing the 6,000-meters in 21:34.9. Reynolds completed the race shortly after with a time of 22:06.6.
"The women have continued to gain confidence through the season, and today they ended it on a positive note," Lockhart commented. "Of course we always want to finish better or beat more people, but it's something we can build off of and will be that much better going forward."
Ethan Bersley was the top-scorer for the Bears on the men's side, finishing the 10,000-meter race in 30:42.5. It was his personal best mark and nearly four minutes faster than his last appearance at the regional championships in 2021.
Carrick Denker was next to cross the line, racing his personal best time of 30:54.8. Landen Lee was the third to finish the race, his first collegiate 10,000-meter competition, which he ran in 31:00.4. Gabriel Abbes also set a personal record, completing the course in 31:44.4.
"We have freshmen-heavy squads, and so much growth has taken place over the ten weeks we've worked together," Lockhart said. "I'm excited about our journey as a program and we will continue to chip away over the course of the year with the vision of becoming a more competitive team."
The Bears now turn their focus to the indoor season in preparation for the 2023 track & field schedule.
