Murphy Becomes First Swimmer To Sweep Backstroke Event; Trenton Julian And Murphy Win 4x100 Medley Relay

MELBOURNE, Australia – Former California men's swimmers Ryan Murphy and Trenton Julian continue to shine at the FINA World Championships (25m). The duo won gold in the 4x100 medley relay setting a new World Record in the event. Murphy also won gold in the 200-meter backstroke and captured silver in the 4x50 medley relay.
 
Murphy's dominating performance in the World Championships continued with a gold in the 200m backstroke on Sunday morning. With the win, Murphy becomes the first man or woman to sweep the backstroke events in the Short Course World Championships, and also won gold in the 50m and 100m backstroke earlier this meet. He finished with a time of 1:47.41. Murphy moved into the lead on the second 50 of the race and never looked back, extending his lead until the final 25m.
 
In the final event of the 2022 Short Course World Championship, the United States team, composed of Murphy, Nic Fink, Julian, and Kieran Smith finished tied with Australia for a gold medal, with a World Record time of 3:18.98. The previous record time of 3:19.16 was set by Russia in 2009. The US got out to a big lead thanks to Murphy's 48.96 split in the back. Julian helped the US maintain the lead with a 49.19 split in the fly.
 
The gold medal was the seventh career medal in the short course championships for Julian, and fourth gold medal.
 
Murphy's final medal came in the 4x50 medley relay. The quartet of Murphy, Fink, Shaine Casas, and Michael Andrew finished with a time of 1:30.37 – a new American Record. The US finished just behind Italy, who finished with a World Record time of 1:29.72. The silver medal gives Murphy 13 for the short course championships, which includes eight gold medals.
