Cal Holds Spartans Scoreless In First Half, Cruises To 12-5 MPSF Victory
BERKELEY – The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team held No. 12 San Jose State scoreless in the first half and cruised to a 12-5 MPSF victory at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Saturday.
The Bears (12-2, 1-2 MPSF) didn't allow a goal until the 5:57 mark of the third quarter, by which time they had already built a 7-0 lead. The Spartans were able to slice Cal's deficit to 8-4 with 5:31 remaining, but the Bears scored four of the final five goals of the game to pull away.
Senior
Emma Wright and sophomore
Ruby Swadling each registered a hat trick for Cal while also adding an assist. Wright also had two steals while senior
Grace Raisin notched a pair of goals.
Junior goalie
Isabel Williams, the MPSF leader in saves per game entering the weekend, was a wall in the cage with 14 saves and a .737 save percentage.
It took awhile for the Bears to find their rhythm offensively, but it didn't matter as the Spartans failed to find strong scoring opportunities. Cal led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter and 5-0 at halftime after Swadling scored the only two goals of the second quarter.
Cal scored two goals during the first two minutes of the third quarter before San Jose St. finally found the back of the cage. After the Spartans trimmed the Bears' advantage to 8-4, Wright and Raisin scored quickly to erase any thoughts of a sustained Spartans comeback.
The Bears were especially effective on their 5-on-6 defense, holding San Jose State to just 3-for-15 on the power play.
Cal returns to action Friday with another MPSF showdown at No. 10 Arizona State.
