ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 3 Cal women's water polo team held No. 2 USC to a tie for its lowest scoring output of the season but couldn't generate enough offense of its own in a 9-7 loss to the Trojans in the semifinals of the 2022 NCAA Championship on Saturday at Canham Natatorium.

The Bears played another game of superb defense, anchored by All-MPSF goalie Isabel Williams. She made 10 more saves to finish with 245 on the season, which ranks fourth all-time at Cal.

Senior Emma Wright, a three-time All-American and 2020 Olympian with her native Canada, had three goals and an assist and finished her Cal career ranked fourth on the program's all-time scoring list with 208 goals.

Sophomore Ruby Swadling capped off a terrific sophomore season with three steals, two assists and a goal while junior Cecily Turner added a pair of goals. Swadling finished the year tied with Wright for the team lead with 32 assists while also registering 35 goals and 23 steals.

The Bears (17-6) and Trojans traded two goals throughout the first period with Swadling and Wright providing the scoring for Cal. Wright's came on a penalty shot.

USC scored the only two goals of the second quarter to take a 4-2 halftime lead.

After the teams traded goals again to start the third period, the Trojans took control with three unanswered scores to lead 8-3 with 6:41 to play.

The Bears qualified for the NCAA Championship for the eighth time in program history this season, and the team has reached the semifinals each time.

Wright, along with fellow seniors Elli Protopapas, Grace Raisin, Carson Broad, Kitty Lynn Joustra and Cynthia Mulder and graduate student Georgia Gilmore wrapped up their Cal careers on Saturday. Protopapas and fellow starter and sophomore Maryn Dempsey were unable to play due to injury.
