IRVINE, Calif. – California rising sophomore Gabriel Jett claimed the 200-meter butterfly crown on the opening night of the 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships, Tuesday at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center.
 
Jett, who hails from Clovis, California, threw down a personal-best 1:54.37 to win the national title in dominant fashion; the Golden Bear bested the field by more than two full seconds. The time makes Jett the seventh-fastest American ever in the event and the eighth-fastest 200m fly swimmer in the world this year. Jett was the fastest in the field in morning prelims as well, clocking another personal best of 1:56.35.
 
Including Jett, Cal was represented by 11 total swimmers throughout three events on the first day of the five-day U.S. national meet.
 
Jett was followed in the 200m fly by Trenton Julian, who won the B-final in 1:54.37, and Jason Louser, who placed 15th in 2:00.11.
 
Destin Lasco paced a group of five Bears who competed in the 100m freestyle. The rising junior touched the wall in 48.75 to take fourth place in the A-final, shaving 0.31 off of his prelims time. Matthew Jensen took 17th with a personal-best 49.47 in prelims.
 
The third and final event of the day saw incoming freshman Matthew Chai (15:43.12) and rising junior Jack Meehan (15:43.65) take 21st and 22nd in the 1500m free, respectively.

Day two of the 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships gets underway Wednesday with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. PT and finals at 5 p.m. PT.
