SAN FRANCISCO/NAPA, Calif. –The California men's tennis team competed in two tournaments Friday, with Golden Bears reaching singles and doubles semifinals at the Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco and more Bears starting play in the Napa Valley Invitational at the Silverado Resort and Spa.
 
In the Battle in the Bay doubles quarterfinals at the California Tennis Club, the second-seeded Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck defeated Arizona State's Jacob Bullard and Max McKennon, 8-6, while Lucas Magnaudet and Ryder Jackson beat UC Santa Barbara's Julian DeSousa and Phillip Jordan (UCSB). Both sets of Bears play their semifinals at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
 
Jackson, a junior transfer for the Bears, had an impressive Friday in the City to advance also to the singles semifinals. In the round of 16, he upset Hawaii's sixth-seeded and 24th-ranked Andre Ilagan, 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-3, and in the quarterfinals, Jackson beat another ranked opponent – UC Santa Barbara's 67th-ranked Phillip Jordan – 6-1, 6-3.
 
Kikuchi had a chance to join Jackson in the singles semis after besting San Diego's Marvin Schaber in the round of 16, 6-1, 6-3. But the Cal veteran – seeded eighth and ranked 62nd – fell in three sets to the top-seeded and fifth-ranked Luc Fomba of TCU, 6-7(9), 6-1, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
 
Over at Silverado, play began in the Napa Valley Invitational, with Cal's Alex Chang topping UNLV's Eduardo Cohen, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman John Kim fell to UNLV's Milos Dabic, 6-2, 6-7(7), 7-5. In doubles, the two Bears lost to San Diego State's Bora Sengul and Alexander Mandma, 8-2.
 
Both tournaments conclude on Sunday.
