BERKELEY – The No. 3 California women's gymnastics team will look to continue its hot start to the season this weekend as the Bears head to the Wasatch Classic in West Valley City Utah. Cal will participate in the third and final quad meet of the weekend at Maverick Center facing No. 16 Iowa, No. 20 Pitt, and No. 26 Oregon State. The meet is set to begin at 7:00 PM PT on Saturday, Jan. 14.

The Bears are coming off of a historic season start after opening the 2023 year last weekend with a first-place finish at the Super 16 Presented by Ozone in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cal notched an overall score of 197.475, the highest score in a season-opener and the 11th-best overall score in program history. This led the team to its highest Road to Nationals ranking in program history as well at third in the country.

Along with that team performance came a number of individual accomplishments including an all-around title for junior Andi Li who notched a 39.450. The veteran tied her career-high with a 9.950 on the uneven bars which also ties the second-best score in the team's record book.

Cal saw the top performance in each of the four events as sophomore Mya Lauzon tied for the vault title with a 9.925. Freshman eMjae Frazier made her collegiate debut in the meet and took the top spot with a 9.950 on each apparatus.

LAUZON AND CESARIO TAKE HOME FIRST PAC-12 HONORS OF THE YEAR
Sophomores Mya Lauzon and Ella Cesario took home the first Pac-12 weekly honors of the season Monday afternoon after outstanding performances at the Super 16 Presented by Ozone this past weekend. Lauzon won the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week Award, while Cesario earned the Coaches Choice Award.

Lauzon got things going in the first rotation on vault as Cal took on the events in Olympic order. Her 9.925 tied her for first place in the session, matched a career-high, and tied for fourth in the nation on opening weekend as one of just ten gymnasts to eclipse the 9.925 mark. She followed with a 9.850 on bars, also tying a career-high and landed tied for seventh in the event. Lauzon wrapped up the afternoon on floor scoring a career-high 9.925, which tied for second in the session and ninth in the nation.

Cesario's story is special. It has been 36 months since she competed in a meet after suffering a knee injury on vault. Saturday afternoon the sophomore made her collegiate debut for the Bears on that very same event and didn't waiver scoring a 9.825, which tied for 6th in the session. Minutes later Cesario was the second Bear to take to the bars and scored a 9.875 that narrowly missed the podium and tied her for 4th in the session.
