Newfeld Eyes Qualification For Second Straight Winter Cup

Live Stream/Live Results

BERKELEY – Two weeks after its best opener in six years, California men's gymnastics is preparing to head down to Palo Alto for its second outing of the season, meeting both top-ranked Stanford and Team USA at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Burnham Pavilion.

For team captain Noah Newfeld, the stakes are especially high, as he stands to potentially qualify for the Winter Cup in straight years. He must finish in the top three (excluding pre-qualifiers) in the all-around, which combines scores from all six events, to punch his ticket to Louisville, Ky., and the chance for a spot on Team USA.

"Last year, wanting to qualify for the Winter Cup was about having the opportunity to have that experience," he said. "Now, I want to qualify in order to prove to myself that I'm improving and having sustained success as a gymnast."

Due to their performances at the Cal Benefit Cup, both Newfeld and senior Noah Sano rank within the top five nationally in specific events. Sano's personal-best 13.950 on pommel horse currently stands at No. 4 in the NCAA, while Newfeld's PR of 14.150 on rings – the third-best mark in modern program history – also lands him at No. 4. The former was named Specialist of the Week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) on Jan. 17, having also set new personal records on parallel bars (13.950) and rings (13.300).

This week, Cal will field some slightly different lineups, including a season debut for 2022 NCAA finalist Landon Wu.

"It's a long season," said head coach J.T. Okada. "We want to make sure the guys stay as healthy as possible in the weeks to come."
