BERKELEY – The California men's basketball team will go for its first regular-season sweep of Stanford since the 2009-10 season when the rivals clash on Saturday night at Maples Pavilion in Stanford. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. PST on ESPNU.

The Golden Bears won their first meeting of the season against Stanford in emphatic fashion on Jan. 6 in Berkeley, tying a school record with 16 made 3-pointers on the way to a 92-70 victory. Cal (3-17, 2-7 Pac-12) has lost four consecutive games since then, while Stanford (8-12, 2-7) enters Saturday's contest on a season-best three-game win streak.

NOTEWORTHY
  • Cal has partnered with Be The Match during the annual #SuitsAndSneakers Week, as basketball teams across the country spread awareness about the importance of cancer screening. Be The Match is a community of donors, volunteers, health care professionals and researchers who deliver cures by helping patients get the life-saving blood stem cell transplant they need.
  • A win on Saturday would be Cal's first on the road this season and its first on the road in Pac-12 play since defeating Oregon in Eugene on Feb. 12, 2022.
  • Cal has lost three straight games played at Stanford. Its last win at Maples Pavilion came on March 7, 2019.
  • The 22-point win (92-70) on Jan. 6 was Cal's largest margin of victory against Stanford since a 26-point difference on Jan. 2, 2010. Cal shot 59.3% (32-of-54) in the win, marking its highest field-goal percentage in a game since converting 60% against Washington in the 2014-15 season.
  • Leading scorer Devin Askew (15.5 points per game) returned to the court against Oregon State last Sunday after missing five consecutive games dating back to Dec. 31 due to injury. Though he scored just eight points, Askew tied a career-high seven assists along with only one turnover.
  • The freshman duo of Grant Newell and ND Okafor have seen their production increase as the season has progressed. Newell, the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for Dec. 19-25, has two double-doubles since Dec. 31 and is averaging 9.6 PPG in the past 10 games. Okafor is shooting just under 60% (20-of-34) from the floor in his past nine games as he continues to supplement senior center Lars Thiemann.
  • Veteran guards DeJuan Clayton and Joel Brown have anchored Cal's perimeter throughout the past month as Askew has been in and out of the rotation due to injury. Clayton was the star of the Stanford win on Jan. 6, scoring 26 points on 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range to go along with six assists and zero turnovers. Brown scored 13-plus points three times in a four-game span from Dec. 18-31 after having done so just once prior in his collegiate career.
  • Cal earned all three of its wins during a four-game homestand from Dec. 21-Jan. 6. In addition to their 52.5 FG% during that homestand, the Bears shot 51.9% from 3-point range (28-of-54) during the same span.
  • The Bears previously owned the Pac-12's third-best 3-point field-goal percentage defense (29.9%) over an 11-game span from Dec. 1-Jan. 18, but their most recent loss to Oregon State on Jan. 22 saw the Beavers make 13-of-24 shots from deep. Cal will look to anchor down its defensive efforts against a Stanford squad that has made at least seven 3-pointers in each of its past seven games.

UP NEXT
The Bears travel to Boulder to face Colorado on Thursday, Feb. 2. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. PST on the Pac-12 Network from the CU Events Center.
