Freshmen Stand Out For Bears At Stanford

Cal Joined Cardinal, Team USA In Talented Field

Facing its first meet after the start of classes on campus, Cal men's gymnastics traveled to a raucous Burnham Pavilion on Saturday evening to share the floor with No. 1 Stanford and Team USA in the former's annual Stanford Open. The Bears finished the night with a total score of 390.100, with its vault lineup once again leading the way with a combined 70.450 points.

Senior Will Lavanakul posted a score of 13.650 on the pommel horse, finishing third overall in the field, while junior Noah Newfeld paced the Bears on rings at 13.450. Junior David Rauchwerger kicked off the vault rotation with a personal-best 14.350, followed shortly thereafter by freshman Khalen Curry's PR of 13.950 and by sophomore Jasper Smith-Gordon's 14.600 – a score which tied Smith-Gordon's personal best and stands just .066 off the modern program record.

Freshman Theodor Gadderud posted a personal best of his own on the parallel bars, adding a score of 13.650 to the Bears' total, while Newfeld led the team in the event with a routine worth 14.200 points. Cal's team captain led once again on the horizontal bar, posting a score of 12.650; finally, Curry notched his second PR of the night, closing the night out with his floor score of 13.550.

Newfeld was the only Bear competing in the all-around, finishing ninth in the overall standings with a point total of 78.650.

Cal heads to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Feb. 11, meeting Air Force and Army in its first collegiate tri-meet of the season.
