TUCSON, Ariz. – The California men's golf team shot a 10-under-par 278 in the opening round of its 2023 spring slate on Monday and will enter the final day of the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate in a two-team tie for third place. Second-round competition was suspended at 5:55 p.m. MST due to darkness; all six competing Golden Bears had played through at least 12 holes of the second round at the time of the suspension.

Cal's performance throughout the first 18 holes – its 278 in round one was its second-lowest score this season – carried over into the second round, with the Bears collectively shooting 5-under before play was halted. Cal is tied for third with BYU at 15-under-par and trails only No. 11 Texas A&M (-26) and No. 11 Arizona (-22), the tournament's five-time reigning champion and host.

All six Bears competing in Tucson dipped below par at one point or another on Monday. Costas Panay and Jeewon Park carded first round scores of 68 and 69, respectively, to pace the group. Panay's 68 was bogey-free with birdies coming on holes 5, 6, 13 and 18. Park is tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard at 5-under through 13 holes played in the second round while Panay is tied for 15th (-4) after 12 played.

Aaron Du (-3) is tied for 21st while Daniel Heo (-1) and Nathan Wang (-1) – who is playing as an individual – are tied for 27th. Sampson Zheng is at even par and tied for 35th.

Both Du and Zheng tallied eagles on Monday; Du earned his on hole 1 of the first round while Zheng notched another on hole 10 in round two.

Park, at 5-under entering Tuesday's play, is five shots behind a four-way individual tie for first place.
