Tyson Named To Julius Erving Award Watch List
Cal Newcomer Among 20 Preseason Selections For Small Forward Of The Year
BERKELEY – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday that California junior
Jaylon Tyson was one of 20 watch-list members for the 2024 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award.
Â
Named after Class of 1993 Hall of Famer and 16-year professional basketball player Julius Erving, the annual honor in its 10th year recognizes the top small forward in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates. The initial watch list will be narrowed down to 10 in late January and to five in late March. The winner of this award, as well as presentation details, will be announced at the Final Four in Phoenix in early April. Players have the ability to play themselves on or off our list until the five finalists are selected.
Â
Tyson, who hails from Plano, Texas, transferred to Cal from Texas Tech this past offseason. He averaged 10.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.3 assists in 31 contests played for the Red Raiders, and shot 48.3% from the floor and 40.2% from behind the arc. The 6-foot-7 wing started all 18 Big 12 games for Texas Tech and saw his production increase with 11.7 PPG and 7.1 RPG in that span. Tyson started his collegiate career at Texas in 2021-22.
Â
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds beginning Friday.
