BERKELEY (AP) – Jaylon Tyson scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in his California debut but Pacific shot 13 for 26 from 3-point range to beat the Golden Bears 87-79 on Friday night in Haas Pavilion.
Pacific's Villiam Garcia Adsten made two foul shots with 7:16 left to give the Tigers (1-1) a 63-62 advantage and they led the rest of the way. Tyson's layup with 9:19 remaining pushed the Bears' lead to 62-58, but they were unable to score again until Jalen Cone made two foul shots with 4:10 left and Cal (1-1) trailing 73-64.
Cone scored a team-high 22 points and knocked down 9 of 11 free throw attempts. Fardaws Aimaq posted 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting along with three blocks.
Tyson, who had his waiver for immediate eligibility approved by the NCAA on Thursday, shot 7 of 11 from the floor and chipped in three assists and two steals in 29 minutes played. He missed the final 5:13 of the contest due to cramping.
Donovan Williams scored 23 points and reserve Judson Martindale scored 15 points for the Tigers, who ended an 11-game losing streak to Cal. Moe Odum scored 11 points and Tyler Beard added 10 points. The Tigers shot 29 for 59 (49.2%) from the field, including its 50% clip from behind the arc.
Cal finished the contest at 46.4% from the field (26 of 56). The Bears attempted 31 free throws, connecting on 21 of them.
The Bears' season-opening homestand continues against Cal State Bakersfield on Monday.
